Today,
in fact, since the beginning of the
twentieth century, most Americans
live in cities, but it wasn't so for
our ancestors. In Lauderdale
County, as in other similar locales,
towns grew up around need.
Mill towns grew in support of timber
operations or the need to process
the local cotton crop, railroad
towns sprouted along each new line
and road extension, resort towns,
too, dotted the railroad line like
buttons on a shirt. The town
has played an important role in the
development of the county and has
always been the epicenter of human
activity and social interaction.
