from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1938 at the Library of
Congress offers more than 2,300 typewritten narratives
comprising over 9,500 page images with searchable text and
bibliographic records, and more than 500 photographs of former
slaves with links to their corresponding narratives.

Freedmen's Bureau
The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen
and Abandoned Lands, often referred to as the Freedmen's Bureau,
was established in the War Department by an act of March 3,
1865. The Bureau supervised all relief and educational
activities relating to refugees and freedmen, including issuing
rations, clothing and medicine.

American soldiers comprised 10% of the entire Union Army. Losses
among African Americans were high, and from all reported

eighteenth century through the nineteenth century, and examines

history of the period. The exhibit showcases the kinds of rare
materials that under scrutiny reveal the ambitions, motivations,
and struggles of people often presumed mute.
